Out patient sweat gland suction
(for the treatment of hyperhidrosis)
Patients suffering from hyperhidrosis axillaris (excessive underarm
sweating) usually have tried everything to keep the problem
under control (deodorant crèmes containing aluminum,
botulinum toxin), with limited success.
An effective method patients tolerate very well is the so-called
suction cure, during which the sweat glands are not only suctioned
clear; they are subsequently also abraded with a sharp spoon.
The first step in the procedure of sweat gland suction used
to treat excessive underarm sweating is identical to liposuction:
After administering a local anesthetic into the arm hollow,
the sweat glands are suctioned clear with a very fine cannula.
To attain even better results, the area is subsequently abraded
to remove any remaining sweat glands. During this process, the
nerve ends that supply the sweat glands, are severed as well.
This surgery is performed under local anesthesia and usually
takes about 60 minutes. During the process about 90 % of the
sweat glands are removed permanently.
In recent years, sweat gland suction has largely replaced botulinum
toxin therapy in the treatment of excessive under arm sweating.
We perform a very large number of sweat gland suction surgeries
at our facility and patients who undergo this treatment are
extremely happy with the outcome.
